Short answer
An N95 respirator fits tight and filters fine particles. Surgical and 3-ply masks fit loose and block splashes and large droplets.
N95 respirators
An N95 seals around the nose and mouth. It filters at least 95 percent of very small particles when it fits well. Healthcare staff use it in higher-risk settings.
Surgical masks
A surgical mask is a loose, flat mask. It protects others from your breath and blocks splashes. Staff wear it in wards and theatres.
3-ply face masks
A 3-ply mask has three layers for general use. Clinics, offices and families use them every day. Check the product specs for the filter rating.
How to wear a mask
- Wash your hands.
- Cover your nose, mouth and chin.
- Press the metal strip on your nose.
- Adjust the straps so there are no gaps.
- Do not touch the front while you wear it.
Single use
Throw away disposable masks after use or when they get wet or dirty. Do not share masks.
