How do you choose an IV cannula?

  • Gauge: smaller numbers mean wider tubes and faster flow.
  • Catheter: FEP or PUR resists kinks and stays soft in the vein.
  • Needle: a back-cut bevel enters with less pain.
  • Port: an injection port allows bolus doses without a line break.
  • Colour: ISO colours help staff pick the right size fast.

How to look after a cannula site

Cover the site with a clear dressing so you can see it. Check it each shift for redness, swelling or pain. Flush the line as your hospital policy says. Remove the cannula if the site looks sore.

Infection control

Clean hands before touching the line. Clean the skin with an antiseptic and let it dry. Never reinsert a needle into the catheter. Record the date the cannula was placed.

Bulk supply for hospitals

Busy wards use cannulas in every size each day. Ordering by the carton keeps all gauges on the shelf. Tell us your monthly use by size and we will suggest a quantity.

Care and usage tips

  • Use the smallest gauge that works.
  • Check the site each shift.
  • Never reinsert the needle.
  • Store boxes away from heat.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IV cannula used for?

It gives access to a vein for fluids, drugs and blood. A thin needle guides a soft plastic tube into the vein. The needle is then removed and the tube stays in. It saves the patient from repeated needle sticks.

How long can an IV cannula stay in?

Many hospitals change peripheral cannulas every 72 to 96 hours, or sooner if a problem appears. Some now leave them in while the site stays healthy. Follow your hospital policy. Remove it at once if the site is red, hard or painful.

How many cannulas come in a box?

Our cannulas come 50 per box, one gauge per box. Hospitals usually order cartons in several sizes. Tell us your monthly use per gauge. We confirm stock, sizes, colour coding and expiry date with your quote. We confirm stock, sizes and delivery time with your quote.
