How do you choose the right walker?
- Support: standard walkers give the most support; rollators the least.
- Strength: wheeled walkers suit users who cannot lift a frame.
- Where you walk: indoors suits two wheels; outdoors suits rollators.
- Rest: choose a seat if the user tires quickly.
- Fit: check height, weight limit and doorway width.
Standard walker vs rollator: which is better?
| Standard walker | Rollator | |
|---|---|---|
| Wheels | None (or 2 front) | 4 with hand brakes |
| Support | Most stable | Less stable |
| Suits | After surgery, poor balance | Active users, outdoors |
| Extras | Light, simple | Seat, basket |
Start with the walker your physiotherapist advises. Many people move from a standard walker to a rollator as strength returns.
Making the home walker-friendly
Remove loose rugs and tidy wires. Make paths at least as wide as the walker. Put a night light between the bed and the toilet. Keep daily items at waist height, so the user does not bend or reach while holding the frame.
Walkers for children
Children need smaller frames, set by a paediatric physiotherapist. Some walk better with a front walker, others with a posterior walker. Check the fit every few months as the child grows. School staff should learn how the walker works too.
When to move to a rollator
Once a user walks steadily without leaning hard on the frame, a rollator may suit them. It needs good hand control for the brakes. Ask your physiotherapist to watch a few walks before you switch.
Care and usage tips
- Check height pins before use.
- Replace worn tips and wheels.
- Lock rollator brakes before sitting.
- Clear rugs and wires from paths.
Frequently asked questions
Which walker is good for elderly people?
A standard folding walker gives the most support after surgery or falls. If lifting it is hard, a walker with front wheels saves energy. Active users who walk outdoors often prefer a rollator with brakes and a seat. A physiotherapist can advise in one visit.
What is the difference between a walker and a rollator?
A standard walker has four legs or two front wheels and gives firm support. A rollator has four wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat. Rollators suit steadier, active users. Walkers suit people who need to lean more weight on the frame.
Can a walker go up stairs?
No. Walkers are for flat floors only. On stairs, use the handrail and a stick, or get help from a carer. If the home has many stairs, ask a physiotherapist about a safe plan, such as a walker on each floor.
How do I fold a walker?
Most folding walkers have push buttons or levers near the top of the frame. Press them and fold each side inward. Lock it open again fully before use, and check it does not wobble. We show you how when we deliver.
