How do you choose the right ECG machine?
- Channels: 3 channel suits light clinic use, 6 channel suits busy OPDs, 12 channel suits cardiology.
- Paper: 12 channel units print on A4; smaller units use narrower rolls that cost less per test.
- Battery: a built-in battery lets you take the machine to the bedside and work through load-shedding.
- Interpretation and export: check for automatic reports and PDF, XML or DICOM export if you keep digital records.
- Stress testing or Holter: choose a stress-ready 12 channel unit or a Holter for long recordings.
3 channel vs 6 channel vs 12 channel ECG: which is better?
| 3 channel | 6 channel | 12 channel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leads recorded | 12 | 12 | 12 |
| Leads per printed row | 3 | 6 | 12 |
| Typical paper | Narrow roll | Medium roll | A4 |
| Suits | GP clinics | OPDs, wards | Cardiology, hospitals |
All three record a full 12-lead ECG. More channels means a faster print and an easier read. Pick by how many ECGs you take each day and who reads them.
Resting ECG, stress ECG or Holter: what is the difference?
A resting ECG takes about 10 seconds while the patient lies still. It is the routine test in clinics and wards.
A stress ECG records the heart during treadmill or bicycle exercise. It shows changes that only appear under effort, so cardiology labs use a 12 channel stress-ready machine.
A Holter records for 24 to 48 hours during normal life. It catches palpitations and rhythm problems that come and go.
Care and usage tips
- Clean the skin and use fresh electrodes for a clear trace.
- Ask the patient to lie still and relax their arms.
- Keep the patient cable loosely coiled when stored.
- Store paper away from heat and sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
Which ECG machine is good for a small clinic?
A 3 channel ECG machine such as the UPMed TEC350 suits most small clinics. It records all 12 leads, has a touch screen and uses low-cost paper rolls. If you see many patients a day, a 6 channel model prints faster.
What is the difference between a 6 channel and 12 channel ECG machine?
Both record all 12 leads. A 6 channel machine prints six leads per row on a paper roll. A 12 channel machine prints all twelve on one A4 page, which cardiologists prefer. 12 channel units often add stress test and export options.
Do your ECG machines have a battery?
The UPMed TEC 650 runs up to 2 hours on its lithium battery. The Edan SE-12 Express has a built-in battery too. We will confirm the battery option for other models with your quote, so you can plan for load-shedding.
What is a Holter ECG and when do I need one?
A Holter is a small recorder the patient wears for 24 to 48 hours. It catches heart rhythm problems that come and go, which a short ECG can miss. Our Contec TLC6000 records 12 leads for up to 48 hours.
