How do you choose a hydrocolloid dressing?
- Fluid level: hydrocolloids suit light to moderate fluid.
- Size: leave a 2–3 cm border around the wound.
- Edges: tapered edges roll less on heels and hips.
- Indicator: a change line takes guesswork out of changes.
- Wound type: avoid hydrocolloids on infected wounds.
Hydrocolloid vs gauze dressing
| Hydrocolloid (DuoDERM) | Gauze dressing | |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture | Keeps wound moist | Can dry and stick |
| Change | Every few days | Daily or more |
| Water | Waterproof | Not waterproof |
| Suits | Bedsores, leg ulcers, minor burns | Fresh cuts, heavy fluid with pads |
Hydrocolloids mean fewer changes and less pain at removal. Gauze still suits many fresh or heavy-fluid wounds.
How to apply a DuoDERM dressing
Clean the wound with saline and pat the skin dry. Warm the dressing in your hands for a minute. Peel the backing and place it centred over the wound. Smooth it from the middle out and hold it for a minute so it sticks.
Preventing bedsores
Turn bed-bound patients every two hours. Use an air mattress for long stays. Keep skin clean and dry, and check heels, hips and the lower back daily. Good food and fluids help skin stay strong.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if the wound grows, smells bad or shows spreading redness. Fever or new pain also needs a check. Diabetic foot wounds need medical care from the start.
Care and usage tips
- Clean with saline before each change.
- Leave a border around the wound.
- Change when gel reaches the indicator.
- Turn bed-bound patients often.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hydrocolloid dressing?
It is a dressing with a gel-forming layer and a waterproof film. The layer absorbs wound fluid and turns into a soft gel. This keeps the wound moist, which supports healing and makes removal less painful. DuoDERM is a well-known hydrocolloid brand.
Can DuoDERM be used on bedsores?
Yes. It is widely used on early to moderate pressure ulcers with light to moderate fluid. It is not for infected or very deep wounds. A nurse or doctor should assess the wound first. We confirm stock, sizes and delivery time with your quote.
