How do you choose the right walking stick?

  • Support needed: light support needs a single stick; more needs a tripod or crutches.
  • Height: the handle should meet your wrist crease.
  • Weak side: hold a stick in the hand opposite the weak leg.
  • Grip and tip: check the handle is comfortable and the tip grips.
  • Purpose: seat sticks rest you; white canes sense, not support.

Single stick vs tripod stick: which is better?

Start with the aid your physiotherapist advises. Many people move from tripod to single stick as they improve.

Walking aid ladder

Most people need less support as they recover. A common order is walker, then tripod stick or crutches, then single stick. Moving down too fast raises fall risk. Ask your physiotherapist when to change aids. Keep the old aid for bad days or long trips.

Using a stick on stairs

Going up, step with the strong leg first, then bring the stick and weak leg. Going down, put the stick and weak leg down first. Remember: up with the good, down with the bad. Always use the handrail if there is one. Take one step at a time, and ask someone to walk beside you at first. Practise with a physiotherapist before going home.

Care and usage tips

  • Replace worn rubber tips.
  • Check height pins before use.
  • Avoid wet floors and loose rugs.
  • Keep the stick within reach when seated.

Frequently asked questions

Which walking stick is good for elderly people?

A height adjustable single stick suits elderly people who are fairly steady. If balance is poor, a tripod stick or walker is safer. Set the handle at wrist height, and replace worn tips. A physiotherapist can recommend the right aid in one visit.

How do I know my walking stick is the right height?

Stand straight in your shoes with arms at your sides. The handle should reach the crease of your wrist. When you hold it, your elbow bends slightly. A stick that is too high or low strains your shoulder and back.

What is the difference between crutches and a walking stick?

A walking stick gives light balance support. Crutches carry much more weight and let you keep weight off an injured leg. Elbow crutches suit long-term use, while underarm crutches suit short-term recovery. Your doctor will advise which you need and for how long.

Is a tripod stick better after a stroke?

Often, yes. A tripod stick gives a wider base for people with one weak side and stands on its own. As balance improves, many move to a single stick. Follow your physiotherapist's advice, since every stroke recovery is different. Never change aids too early.
