How do you choose the right TENS machine?

  • Goal: TENS eases pain; EMS works muscles; combined units do both.
  • Channels: two suit most users; four treat two areas at once.
  • Control: home users like presets; physios want adjustable Hz and pulse width.
  • Power: check battery type and whether a rechargeable or charger is included.
  • Safety: look for auto shut-off, key lock and a timer.

Neither is better overall; they do different jobs. Combined units suit people who need both.

Where should TENS pads go?

Place the pads around the painful area, not on it if the skin is sore. Keep at least 2 to 3 cm between pads. Never place them on the front of the neck, across the chest, over the eyes or on broken skin. A physiotherapist can show you the right spots for your pain.

Pads and accessories

Pads lose grip with use and need regular replacement. Check the pin size of the lead wires, usually 2 mm, before buying spares. We can quote pads and lead wires with any TENS machine. Buy a spare set so treatment never stops.

How long does TENS take to work?

Most people feel tingling at once and pain relief within 10 to 30 minutes. Relief often lasts a few hours after the session. If you feel no change after several sessions, ask your physiotherapist to adjust the settings or pad positions.

Care and usage tips

  • Switch off before moving pads.
  • Store pads on their film.
  • Replace pads that lose grip.
  • Remove batteries during long storage.

Frequently asked questions

Is a TENS machine good for back pain?

Many people find TENS eases back pain for a few hours after each session. It blocks pain signals but does not fix the cause. Use it alongside exercise and advice from a physiotherapist. Results vary, so try it for a few sessions before you decide.

How many minutes should I use a TENS unit?

Most sessions last 20 to 60 minutes, a few times a day. Follow your physiotherapist's plan for your condition. Give the skin a break between sessions. Stop if the skin gets red or sore, and check the pad positions. Clean skin helps pads stick.

What is the difference between TENS and EMS?

TENS targets nerves to ease pain with a tingling feeling. EMS makes muscles contract to build strength or prevent wasting. Some units, like the Beurer EM80 and Physio Stim, do both. Choose by whether pain or weak muscles is your main problem.

Who should not use a TENS machine?

Ask a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or implant, heart disease, epilepsy or are pregnant. Never place pads on the front of the neck, across the chest or on broken skin. Do not use it while driving or in water.
