How do you choose the right OT light?
- Case type: major deep surgery needs a ceiling dual dome; minor work needs a mobile or compact light.
- Brightness and depth: look at lux and depth of illumination, not just LED count.
- Colour: CRI 90 or more and 4000–5000 K show tissue accurately.
- Room: check ceiling height (2.7–3 m) before ordering a ceiling light.
- Power: choose LED to save power, and a battery model for load-shedding.
Ceiling vs mobile OT light: which is better?
| Ceiling OT light | Mobile OT light | |
|---|---|---|
| Use | Major surgery, main OT | Minor OT, ER, labour room, backup |
| Brightness | Up to 160,000 lux | 40,000–150,000 lux |
| Coverage | 1 or 2 large domes | Single 200–500 mm head |
| Installation | Fixed to concrete slab | Rolls on castors |
Most hospitals fit a ceiling light in the main OT and keep a mobile light for minor work and backup.
LED vs halogen OT lights
LED lights run cooler, use less power and last about 50,000 hours. Halogen bulb lamps cost less to buy but need bulb changes and give warmer light. For daily use, LED usually costs less over its life.
What do lux, CRI and depth mean?
Lux is how bright the light is on the wound. CRI shows how true colours look; 90 or more is good for surgery. Depth of illumination is how far the light stays bright into a cavity. For abdominal work, look for 800 mm or more.
Care and usage tips
- Clean the head only when cool, with a mild disinfectant.
- Use sterile handle covers in every case.
- Check arm balance and fixings every year.
- Test battery backup monthly on emergency models.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of an OT light in Pakistan?
It depends on the light type, number of domes, LEDs and brand. We do not list prices because rates change often. Message us on WhatsApp with the model or your theatre needs. We will send a live quote with stock and delivery time.
What lux do I need for an OT light?
Most major surgery lights give 120,000 to 160,000 lux at the field. Minor procedures work well at 40,000 to 80,000 lux. Depth of illumination matters too: look for 800 to 1000 mm or more for abdominal work. Ask us to match a light to your case mix.
What is the difference between LED and halogen OT lights?
LED OT lights run cooler, use less power and last around 50,000 hours. Halogen lights cost less upfront but need bulb changes and get hot. Most new theatres now choose LED for comfort and lower running costs. Halogen still suits backup lights on a tight budget.
Do I need a battery-backed OT light?
If you face load-shedding and your generator takes time to start, yes. A battery model like the KL5 keeps the field lit during the gap. Many hospitals keep one mobile battery light in each theatre as backup. Test the battery every month.
Do you install ceiling OT lights?
Ceiling lights need a fixing plate into the concrete slab and correct arm balance. We will confirm installation, ceiling height and fixing details with your quote. Plan installation before the false ceiling is finished to save rework. Mobile lights need no installation.
